What travel writers say

Don’t forget, whilst you’re in Keflavik, make sure to see; the Anchor Monument, Stekkjarkot and Viking World (if the weather takes a turn for the worse).

Contrary to what many may think, planes arriving in Iceland do not land in Reykjavik. Instead, their wheels hit the tarmac in Keflavik, 50 kilometres to the southwest. For many visitors, their experience with this place is solely about the airport. However, if you have the time or interest, this sizable town has plenty to see and do. From museums to storybook trolls, this place has it all!

The story of my ´nomadic life´ is one in which I have yet to work in Canada as a post university graduate with the majority of my 20´s having been spent overseas in Asia working as an expat English teacher, model, photographer, freelance writer and – of course – as a wandering nomadic soul completely infatuated by all the splendor and woe longterm travel has to offer an individual.
Good to know: You'll need a car for this trip. We recommend renting a car at Keflavik airport for the entire duration of your trip.

Loved Iceland. The people were friendly and the scenery was beautiful. Favorites included Diamond Beach, Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon, Dynjandi Waterall (although all the waterfalls were stunning), Landmanalauger, and an ice cave tour. Don't miss Fjadrargljuyfur canyon if you are in the area, a true gem. If you get to Isafjordur, you might want to visit the Museum of Ordinary Things. It is small but offers a unique view into the Icelandic life. Hotels were all great, Hotel Magma was superb.

By a renting a car, me and my partner saved so much money on travel. We did the golden circle tour ourselves without booking an excursion and going on the coach which coast £200 plus, we just got some snacks and hit the road (the drive around the golden circle tour, one of the best drives of my life. The scenary was amazing, we could stop off when ever we wanted, we could leave whenever we wanted without having to wait for people to get back onto the coach. Night times, we put a location in our phones and drove around looking for the northern lights. Was definitely worth getting a car

You need a car to get around Iceland. Trips with tour companies are overpriced and not good value for money, in my opinion. Remember that the top speed on dual carriageways is 90 kph (about 55mph), with some urban areas being just 30kph (less than 19mph). There is pretty much zero tolerance on Drinking and Driving, with just one of the local standard (weak at 2.3%) beers putting you over the limit. Thankfully, we had kids with us, so I didn't drink at all and only found out later how stringent the law was with regards to D&D.

We had a wonderful visit to your beautiful country. The people are very friendly and good-natured. We thoroughly enjoyed every place we visited and would highly recommend the adventure to other people who are thinking of a vacation there. If you have the time and are comfortable about driving in a foreign country, I would recommend renting a car as it gives you the opportunity to tour with-out any time restraints.

Definitely rent a 4X4 SUV, even the paved roads are like gravel roads depending on the point of interest. The rain, snow and ice wreak havoc on the roads and we could not visit many places because we had a front wheel drive sedan. You need a car with climate control and heated seats, get a automatic unless you're really good with stick shift. Lastly, the car rental places look at every little scratch so make sure to take lots of pictures when you rent and take a good 10-15 min to inspect it all around before you drive away with the car.

Expect sky high prices in Iceland. I bought a small beer for £7, .Fish soup cost £15, a small fish & chips was £12.50. So get self-catering accommodation and feed yourself from the supermarkets. I didn't come across a sand storm in the south of the country but was warned about them, and they can affect your insurance cover.

If you are planning to drive your self on your Iceland visit keep in mind that not that many roads are paved and roads are very narrow with no shoulders. The max speed limit is 90 kilometers hour (60 miles an hour) every speed limit is very enforced! keep to the speed limit you will get a ticket in the mail if you are caught on camera. And will be pulled over if seen by officer. Also remember it is open range in many areas, you have live stock roaming on the side of the roads or crossing the roads keep it slow and be alert of your surroundings. Main thing is take your time and enjoy the drive so many places to stop and enjoy your visit to Iceland. There is no need to rush around

Renting a car in Iceland was a good choice. I planned to have my phone work with my cell phone provider so we had google maps. We drove the golden circle, to the south waterfalls and black beaches -- really everywhere on our own and it was really easy. We saw many tour buses at our destinations and are happy with the choice that we went on our own versus with a group.
