Located in the north-central part of the country, Skopje is both the capital of North Macedonia and the port of entry for most foreign visitors. While not as immediately stunning as some other Balkan cities, it has plenty to enjoy if you know where to look, not least of which includes landmarks such as Skopje Fortress and the Old Bazaar. Nearest petrol station
A Makpetrol gas station is located directly outside the airport on the right-hand side of Highway A1 when returning to the airport. You have to exit the highway one exit before the airport exit to reach it. The station is about two minutes from the airport and is open 24/7. There are many other gas stations along the way.

Had a great self driving tour of North Macedonia - highly recommended. Roads are in good condition and largely free of traffic (even at rush hour in the cities!). Some roads are toll roads though these are cheap and can be paid in cash or by card. A satnav (and / or good maps) is important as North Macedonian signage does leave something to be desired!
