Crete is big and you need a car as taxis are really expensive! The roads are scenic, highly recommend a smaller nippier car for the mountain roads. Samaria Gorge, 900 year old Olive Tree, Elafonisi Beach (don't take the sand!) and Chania old town are all beautiful and worth a visit!

We have visited Crete many times previously, we stayed at the following locations: Chania, a great town to explore; Sougia, a small and remote resort feels like the end of the world which is why we like it, very good for walking; Rethymno, another large town which is definitely worth an explore; Kalamaki, a very small resort, a bit scruffy but great value and worth a look around and finally Plakias, a popular resort, you won't be disappointed.

Crete is a perfect island for exploring but very mountainous and minor roads extremely steep. I would have hired a more powerful car in hindsight. Cretan people are lovely and the food has improved over the years. Will visit again.

My trip was a combination of seeing ancient sites, sunbathing and swimming and exploring. Highlights: visiting various museums and ancient sites; Lake Kurnos is super beautiful first thing in the morning or in the evening... the beef and lamb stews in the restaurant up the hill overlooking the lake were really good. Pinelopi studios on the beach at Georgiopolis were really lovely as is the beach. Loutraki beach is tiny with crystal clear waters and 12 mins from the airport but it looks like they are building a big, discreet but big complex right next to it, so I am not sure what will happen to it. I imagine it will get very crowded.

It was for my son's destination wedding in Crete, which was amazing. I used the car to ferry various of my children to and from airports, and the whole family to the wedding destination, as I calculated it would be much cheaper than using taxis. However, with the £400+ charge for a surface scratch on the front bumper, that wasn't the case.
