Understanding Insurance Offers at the Rental Desk

When picking up your car, the car rental supplier may offer you additional coverage. In most cases, this coverage is optional, so you can decline it if you meet all the rental conditions for your booking.

There are some situations when the car rental supplier may require you to purchase their coverage before providing a car.

When is the car rental supplier’s coverage mandatory?

The supplier may require you to purchase their insurance if:

  • Your booking does not include the basic coverage package (CDW, TPL, TP) required to drive the car. You can check which coverage is included in your rental conditions.
  • The main driver does not meet the rental conditions. For example, they may not have an accepted payment method or required document.

In these situations, coverage purchased through DiscoverCars.com doesn’t replace the coverage required by the car rental supplier.

When is the car rental supplier’s coverage optional?

If the main driver meets all rental conditions and arrives within the supplier's allowed pick-up time, additional coverage offered at the rental desk is generally optional. This also applies to additional coverage offered by DiscoverCars.com

You can decline the optional coverage offered at the desk and proceed with the rental without purchasing it.

How is supplier insurance different from DiscoverCars' coverage?

DiscoverCars.com coverage and coverage offered by the car rental supplier are separate products.

DiscoverCars.com coverage is an independent reimbursement policy, which provides more extensive protection at up to 4 times lower cost. If an eligible charge is made by the supplier, you generally pay the supplier first and can then submit a claim according to the coverage terms. Supplier's insurance is part of the rental agreement you sign directly with the car rental supplier. Depending on the product, it may also reduce or waive the security deposit, but it's also way more expensive.
This can be useful when you do not have a valid payment method.

What if the main driver meets the rental conditions, but the car rental supplier says the coverage is mandatory?

If you meet all the rental conditions but the car rental supplier tells you that additional coverage is mandatory, contact DiscoverCars.com before making any additional payments or signing any documents that you don't agree with.

Keep any relevant documents or evidence provided by the supplier.
