Is my payment card accepted?

Car rental payments are usually split between DiscoverCars.com and the car rental supplier. Knowing what you pay at each stage can help you avoid unexpected costs at pick-up.

It’s important to understand the difference between payments made online to DiscoverCars.com and payments made to car rental suppliers when you pick up the car.

Payments made to DiscoverCars.com

When you book through DiscoverCars.com , you can pay for the rental prepayment or any coverage purchased with us.

You can pay online using:

  • Credit or debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Amex)
  • Apple Pay,
  • Google Pay,
  • Revolut Pay,
  • PayPal,
  • Booking Credit

These payment methods apply to payments made on DiscoverCars.com and may not be accepted by the rental supplier at pick-up.

You can not use DiscoverCars.com to pay suppliers' security deposit or rental desk extras.

Payments made to car rental suppliers

Each car rental supplier has its own payment requirements. The specific requirements for each offer can be found in the rental conditions before booking.

Most suppliers require a credit card in the main driver's name, usually a Visa or Mastercard. Some suppliers also require the card to have a printed card number on it and the main driver's full name. Certain suppliers may have additional requirements, such as embossed card numbers.

What if the main driver does not have an accepted payment method?

If the main driver does not have a payment method that meets the car rental supplier's requirements, you should change the main driver to someone who has an accepted payment method.

If this is not possible, there are three alternatives:

  • Contact the car rental supplier directly and ask whether they offer an alternative, such as additional insurance that would allow the main driver to collect the car without having an accepted payment method.
  • Cancel the booking
  • Search for a no-card offer on DiscoverCars.com. You can use a no-card filter when searching for a car.

A card belonging to a relative, friend, or another passenger usually cannot be used instead of a card in the main driver's name. Company cards may also be rejected if the main driver's name is not shown on the card.

What if the main driver only has a debit card?

Some suppliers accept debit cards, but this depends on the specific rental offer.
Before booking, check the rental conditions to confirm whether the supplier accepts debit cards. You can also use the debit card filter when searching for a car.

If your current offer doesn't accept debit cards, you can:

  • Change your booking and select an offer that accepts debit cards, or
  • Change the main driver to someone who has accepted the payment method.

Not sure if your card is a credit or a debit?

The terminology used for payment cards can vary between countries, so it may not always be clear whether your card is a "credit card".

If you are unsure, contact your bank and ask them to confirm the type of card you have.
You can also inform your bank that the card's issuer identification number (IIN) should be identified as a credit card by the car rental supplier payment system.
