How can I avoid leaving a security deposit?
In most cases, a security deposit is a standard part of renting a car.
However, you can easily skip the deposit by specifically booking a "No Deposit" vehicle or by purchasing the local supplier's additional coverage right at the counter.
Step-by-Step Guide:
When searching for a car on our site, just look for the "No Deposit" filter on the left-hand side (desktop) or near the top (mobile). This handy tool shows you all the cars that don't require a deposit hold!
Keep in mind, you might still have to leave a Fuel Deposit.
If you already have a booking, take a quick peek at the "Payment" section on your voucher.
If there's a deposit amount listed, the local team will need you to have those funds available on your card at pick-up.
If you're already at the rental desk and prefer not to leave a deposit, just ask the staff if they offer a "Super Cover" or "Zero Excess" insurance package. Adding their specific coverage often waives or significantly lowers the deposit amount, though it does come at an extra daily cost.
"I bought Full Coverage from DiscoverCars.com, so my deposit is $0."
Our Full Coverage is a wonderful way to protect yourself financially after your trip, but the local supplier will still need to place a standard security deposit hold on your card before handing over the keys.
"I can just tell them I don't want to leave a deposit."
Because the car is such a valuable asset, the security deposit is a standard requirement for almost all rentals. To skip the hold, the local team usually just asks that you purchase their in-house coverage package instead.
💡 Did You Know?
The security deposit is generally just a "hold" on your funds, rather than a standard charge. This means the money stays right in your account, it’s just temporarily paused until you return the car safely!
What To Do Next:
Take a quick look at your booking voucher today. If you see a deposit amount listed and you'd prefer not to leave one, you can easily modify your booking to a "No Deposit" offer right now, or simply plan to purchase the supplier's insurance package when you arrive at the desk.
