What is the Deposit Free Option?
If you've rented a car before, you know the routine: before you get the keys, the rental company blocks a security deposit on your credit card - a hold that exceeds the price of the rental itself, and that may take days or even weeks to be released after you return the car.
Deposit Free removes that step entirely. With a Deposit Free booking, you pick up your rental car without leaving any security deposit, and without needing to present a payment card at the rental desk. Your money stays in your account, available for your trip. Instead of you leaving a deposit, DiscoverCars.com guarantees the rental company that any eligible charges will be settled, so pickup is faster, simpler, and stress-free.
Deposit Free option is available on Fully Prepaid bookings. Because no card is required for the car itself, it's ideal if you travel with a debit card, don't have a credit card in the main driver's name, or simply don't want a large amount frozen while you travel.
Important: Deposit Free removes the security deposit - it does not reduce your responsibilities. You remain liable for charges under the rental agreement, such as vehicle damage (up to the excess/deductible), missing fuel, tolls, traffic fines, and cleaning fees. Deposit Free is not an insurance product. If you'd like protection against damage costs, see how Full Coverage helps in “What To Do Next” below.
New to car rental? Two terms worth knowing. A security deposit is a temporary hold the rental company normally places on your card as a guarantee - Deposit Free removes it. The excess (or deductible) is the maximum amount you'd pay out of pocket if the car is damaged or stolen - Deposit Free does not change it, but Full Coverage protects you against any damage-related costs or administration fees.
Step-by-Step Guide:
When searching for a rental car, select the “No Deposit” and/or “No Card Required” filters to see all eligible offers. You can also spot them at a glance by the “Deposit Free” badge in the search results, and the price you see already includes the Deposit Free option, so there are no surprises later.
Complete your booking just like any other reservation. The Deposit Free add-on will already be selected for you (you can remove it at this step if you prefer a standard offer). That's it - no security deposit will be required at pickup.
At the rental desk, simply show your driving licence and ID and sign the rental agreement as usual. You won't be asked to leave a security deposit, and no payment card is required to collect the car. Grab the keys and enjoy your trip.
If you decide to add optional extras or local services at the desk, for example, an upgrade, GPS, a child seat, an additional driver, a cross-border permit, or a rental extension, you'll pay the rental company directly for those. Only in that case, check the Rental Conditions of your offer to see which payment methods the rental company accepts for local purchases. This applies only to the extras, not to the car rental itself.
What Customers Often Expect vs What Actually Happens:
"Deposit Free means I don't need to bring a payment card to the rental desk."
Correct - for the car rental itself, no payment card is needed to pick up the car. The only exception is if you need to pay for an extra or local service at the desk (such as an upgrade, GPS, or an additional driver). In that case, you'll pay the rental company directly for that item using a payment method they accept - you'll find the details in the Rental Conditions.
"Deposit Free means the car is fully insured, so I won't have to pay if something happens."
Deposit Free is not an insurance product - it removes the security deposit requirement. You remain responsible for charges related to the rental, including vehicle damage (up to the excess), missing fuel, tolls, traffic fines, cleaning fees, and other applicable charges under the rental agreement. If you want protection against damage costs, adding Full Coverage is the way to do it.
"The desk agent said my Full Coverage won't help me and offered their own insurance instead."
Rental companies may offer their own insurance options at the desk, and it's always optional. If you've added Full Coverage from DiscoverCars.com, you're already protected against damage costs, and with a Deposit Free booking, we settle damage directly with the rental company on your behalf - you don't need to buy anything extra at the desk. Feel free to politely decline and enjoy your trip.
“If a charge comes up, money will just disappear from my card.”
It can't - the rental company doesn't keep your card details, because there's no card and no deposit in the first place. If a charge is identified when you return the car, you can settle it with the rental company on the spot if you wish, but you don't have to. For anything identified later (such as a toll or a traffic fine), we'll contact you directly with the details and settle it together - transparently, with no hidden charges.
💡 Did You Know?
The security deposit is one of the most common frustrations in car rental - large holds, cards declined at the desk, and refunds that arrive late or incomplete. Deposit Free removes that entire experience: you collect your car without presenting a payment card and without a single euro blocked. Your responsibilities under the rental agreement stay exactly the same - if charges are identified during or after the rental, you may still need to pay them, and for anything identified after drop-off, we'll get in touch to settle it with you directly.
What To Do Next
For a completely worry-free trip, we highly recommend adding Full Coverage and/or Roadtrip Protection during booking.
Here's why the combination works so well: Deposit Free means nothing is blocked on your card, and Full Coverage means you won't pay out of pocket if the car is damaged. If damage occurs, we settle it directly with the rental company on your behalf - there's nothing for you to pay upfront or claim back afterwards for damage-related costs. Together, they come as close to a truly zero-stress rental as it gets.
(Non-damage charges - such as tolls, traffic fines, and missing fuel - remain your responsibility under the rental agreement, as with any car rental.)
