How do I return my rental car?

We hope you had a fantastic road trip! As you prepare to head home, returning your vehicle should be a breeze. Just return the car to the exact location specified on your voucher, at the scheduled time, with the required fuel level.

Step-by-Step Guide:

1Check Your Voucher

Confirm the drop-off address and the rental office opening hours.
If you are returning the car at an airport, simply follow the signs for “Car Rental Return.

2Refuel

Fill the tank to the agreed level (usually Full-to-Full) within 10 km of the drop-off point. Keep the final gas station receipt as proof.

3Inspect & Document (Crucial Step)

Park the car in the designated supplier bay. Before handing over the keys, take clear photos or a short video of the vehicle’s exterior (all sides), the interior, the mileage, and the fuel gauge. These records serve as helpful proof of the car’s condition at the time of return and can support you if any questions about damage or fuel levels arise later.

4Hand Over

Give the keys to the rental agent and ask for a signed check-out report confirming the car’s return condition.

5After Hours

If the office is closed (and your booking allows after-hours returns), lock the car and place the keys in the secure drop-box. It’s helpful to photograph the car parked safely in the return area before leaving.

Expectation:

"I can return the car a few hours late without charge."

Reality:

Rental periods run in strict 24-hour cycles. Suppliers typically offer a short grace period (often 30–60 minutes). Returns beyond that window often lead to an additional rental day charged at the supplier’s local rate, sometimes with a late fee.

Expectation:

"I can drop the car at a different branch if my plans change."

Reality:

Once you pick up the car, your contract becomes active with the supplier. DiscoverCars.com cannot change the drop-off location at this stage. Any request to return the vehicle at a different branch must be approved directly by the rental supplier. Returning the car to a different location without the supplier’s approval can lead to significant one-way or relocation charges, as the vehicle would need to be moved back to the original branch. Always contact the supplier first so they can confirm and register the change properly.

Expectation:

"I will get a refund if I return the car a day early."

Reality:

While you are welcome to return the car early, unused rental days are strictly non-refundable because the vehicle was reserved exclusively for you for the full duration.

💡 Did you know?

Taking a quick photo of the fuel gauge and the car parked in the return bay can protect you from potential disputes over fuel charges. It only takes 30 seconds but gives you complete peace of mind and can save you a significant amount.

What To Do Next:

Head to the drop-off location listed on your voucher. If you are running late than scheduled or need to discuss a different drop-off city, call the rental supplier directly using the phone number on your physical rental agreement.
