Why did the rental desk tell me my DiscoverCars insurance is 'invalid' or 'doesn't exist'?

Your DiscoverCars.com Full Coverage is completely valid! The rental agent can not see it in their system because it’s an independent reimbursement protection we provide, not a policy issued by the rental company.

Step-by-Step Guide:

1Understand the Difference

Rental companies sell “waivers” that can reduce or remove your security deposit instantly.
Our Full Coverage works differently—it reimburses you after any eligible costs are paid.

2Leave the Deposit

Since you didn’t purchase the supplier’s in-house insurance, their system will require you to place a standard security deposit hold on your credit card.

3Decline Extra Coverage

As long as you have a valid, physical credit card in the main driver's name with sufficient funds for the deposit, you can confidently decline the supplier’s additional insurance.

4Drive with Peace of Mind

If any damage happens during your trip, you will simply pay the rental company, and we will reimburse you afterwards according to your Full Coverage policy.

Expectation:

"I bought Full Coverage, so the rental desk will see I am fully insured and hand me the keys."

Reality:

The rental agent only sees that you didn't buy their specific product. They will still strictly require a security deposit, and they may try to sell you their own coverage by falsely claiming ours is "invalid." It is only "invalid" for the purpose of waiving their deposit—it is perfectly valid for reimbursing you!

Expectation:

"The agent forced me to buy their insurance as a scam."

Reality:

If you arrived at the desk with a debit card instead of a qualifying credit card, the supplier is usually forced by their own policies to mandate their in-house insurance to waive the deposit you cannot leave. In this specific case, it is not a scam, but a strict requirement of the Rental Conditions.

💡 Did You Know?

It’s common for suppliers to offer extra coverage at the desk, sometimes using high-pressure sales tactics. You’re never obligated to accept these add-ons if you meet the Rental Conditions for the deposit!

What To Do Next:

Present your physical credit card for the security deposit and politely but firmly say "No thank you" to their additional insurance. If the agent still requires their coverage despite you having a valid credit card and meeting the deposit criteria, contact our support team right from the desk—we’ll assist you immediately!
