What is covered by Third-Party Liability (TPL)?
Third-Party Liability (TPL) insurance is designed to protect you from the costs of damages you accidentally cause to other people or their property while driving the rental car.
It is important to note that TPL does not cover any damage to the rental vehicle you are driving.
Step-by-Step Guide:
Simply open your confirmation email or log in to the "My Booking" section to easily locate the "Rate Includes" area.
If you happen to be at fault in an accident, TPL steps in to cover bodily injury to others (like pedestrians or other drivers) and damage to their property (like cars or fences).
In Europe, TPL is usually standard and already included in your rate!
However, in the US, Canada, and parts of South America, basic liability limits can be a bit lower or sometimes excluded, since many local drivers prefer to use their own personal insurance.
If TPL isn't listed as included, you'll simply need to provide proof of your own valid liability policy, or you can easily add Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) right at the rental desk.
"I bought 'Full Coverage' from DiscoverCars, so I'm covered for everything, including other people."
Our Full Coverage is a wonderful reimbursement service that protects the rental car itself (covering things like bodywork, tires, and glass). For protection involving other people or their property, you'll just rely on Third-Party Liability coverage instead!
"I am safe to drive without buying extra liability in the US."
Since having TPL is a standard requirement for driving in most countries, including the US, it's always best to make sure you're covered. If the basic included limits are a bit low, adding SLI is a great way to ensure you're fully protected from any unexpected out-of-pocket costs.
💡Did You Know?
Third-Party Liability (TPL) specifically protects other people and their property, while the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is designed to protect the rental car itself!
What To Do Next:
If TPL isn't already included in your booking, just reach out to your personal car insurance provider to see if their coverage extends to rentals at your destination.
If it doesn't, you can easily plan to add SLI at the rental counter so you're completely prepared for a safe and worry-free trip!
