Can I cross the border between North and South Cyprus?

Cyprus is a beautiful island to explore! If you're hoping to cross the border (the "Green Line") in your rental car, it all comes down to the specific Rental Conditions of the vehicle you choose.
Many suppliers have guidelines around travel between the two sides of Cyprus because of unique insurance and regional differences.

Step-by-Step Guide:

1Check Before You Book

Just click on the "Rental Conditions" link right under the car photo on our search page.

2Find the Policy

Scroll down to the "Cross-border travel" section
This will let you know if driving to the "North" or the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)" is an option.

3Ask for Written Permission

Even if the policy says it's allowed, it's best to let the rental supplier know in advance or at the counter.
This way, they can add a written note to your rental agreement for you!

4Look Into Extra Insurance

It's good to keep in mind that standard rental insurance provided in the South usually doesn't carry over once you cross the border. You'll likely just need to pick up a separate third-party insurance policy right at the border checkpoint.

Expectation:

"It’s one island, so I can drive anywhere I want."

Reality:

The Green Line actually separates two different regions. Because insurance from the South rarely covers the North, many suppliers ask that you stay on one side to make sure their vehicles stay fully insured.

Expectation:

"I purchased DiscoverCars Full Coverage, so I am fully protected regardless."

Reality:

Our Full Coverage does a great job protecting you, provided the rental supplier gave you written permission to cross the border on your rental agreement. If you cross without that quick update to your contract, it unfortunately means the coverage (including ours) won't be able to step in and protect you.

💡Did you know?

Crossing a border without checking in with the supplier first goes against standard rental guidelines. If you happen to break down or have an accident on the other side without permission, you would be responsible for covering any costs like towing or repairs yourself.

What To Do Next:

If you already have a booking, take a quick peek at your voucher under "Rental Conditions."
If you haven't booked yet, just read through those conditions while you search.
If the details aren't clear or you're ever unsure, reach out to our support team and we’ll gladly double-check the supplier's policy for you!
