Crete is a beautiful place to visit. Cities of Rethymnon and Chania are a must. Take your wallet, the shops are amazing. Hire a pedalo on Lake Kournas and see the nesting turtles and sea snakes, (not too many to frighten anyone). The beaches at Georgeopolou and Kalyves are beautiful.

Crete is beautiful island with lots of amazing nature spots and vibrant cities. Renting a car was definitely the right decision to see different places at the coast line and in the inner land. Lake Kournas and Rethymno city was our favorite! Also with two small babies on board ☺️ The palace of Knossos is also worth of visiting!

Crete is marvelous. I did not go very far, and unfortunately spent too much time lost in downtown Heraklion and Chania. Knossos is a must. I also enjoyed the Holy Trinity Monastery near Chania.

If you plan to visit Crete for more than just a couple of day I highly recommend renting a car. The roads were all in good shape with clearly marked signage and driving is the best way to get around the island. There are so many beaches and areas with different terrain, it was a real treat to drive and check them out.

there is no way you could go to Crete without a car, only if you go with an agency and they plan everything and they take you everywhere. It was the best thing to rent a car, and the price was afordable.

Love Crete. My suggestion is to travel in the low season (June or even better September for the warmer see) and explore the western or eastern borders (or the south part) which are lovely and wild.There is so much to do other than going for beaches: hiking in wonderful gorges or peaks, exploring archeological sites and museums, and get lot in the inland parts. 1 week is not enough, you need to decide weather to go east or west.

When driving on side roads of Crete the driver should be very attentive because of sudden big holes in asphalt which could be big enough to damage the car (happend to me).
There are streets in towns and villages in Crete so narrow (with parked cars on the side) that it takes lots of careful manoeuring to not scratch the car.

Loved everything about our visit to Crete. Highlights included visit to Elaphinisi Beach - probably the most beautiful, spectacular, unspoilt beach I have ever visited. Would highly recommend hiring a car - as the drives along the coast or across the higher mountain roads provides some spectacular scenery. We stayed in the Asterion Suites and Spa in the Chania region - beautiful hotel with fantastic facilities and the most friendly of staff.

Herakleion is the place to rent a car. There are so many excersion and nice place to visit around. The pariking in the center the most of the times was not a problem. Many times we parked for free and even the times we had to park in a private parking the cost was 4,00 to 5,00 euros.

Prepare yourself for driving on Greek roads, particularly in busy towns and at night. You get used to it, but it can be quite daunting at first.
Be aware of potential inaccuracy on phone map navigation, particularly if journeying on mountain roads through small villages.
