My driver’s license has recently been renewed. Will it be accepted?

Yes, your renewed license is absolutely accepted!
Just keep in mind: most rental suppliers require drivers to have held a license for at least 1 or 2 years (you can check the exact requirement in your Rental Conditions).
When a driver’s license is renewed, the “Date of Issue” on the front of the card is updated to the renewal date. If that date is very recent, the rental agent may think you’re a brand-new driver and could deny the rental to comply with their insurance policy.

Step-by-Step Guide:

1Check the back of your card

Many licenses include the “Original Date of Issue” on the back. If yours shows it, you can simply point it out to the rental agent at the desk.

2Bring proof of your driving history (if needed)

If the card only shows the recent renewal date, it’s helpful to bring an additional document confirming when you first obtained your license. For example:

  • Your previous physical driver’s license (if you still have it).
  • A printed official driving record or history letter from your licensing authority (for example, a DVLA check code summary in the UK).
3Physical documents only

Digital photos, app records, or photocopies are usually rejected
To stay safe, always bring the original physical documents.

4Match your names

If your license was renewed after a name change (for example, marriage), ensure the name on your booking and credit card matches your new license.

Expectation:

“I’ve been driving for many years, so the agent will recognize that I’m an experienced driver.”

Reality:

Rental agents follow insurance guidelines and confirm the information shown on the documents provided at the counter. When the original issue date is visible or supported by a driving record, it helps them quickly verify your experience.

💡Did you know?

Rental agents operate under strict insurance requirements, so they verify eligibility based on the information shown on the documents presented at the counter.
Even if you have many years of driving experience, the agent can confirm only what is clearly indicated on your license or supporting documents.

What to do next:

Open your voucher and click the “Rental Conditions” link to see the exact driving experience required by your supplier
If your renewed license does not display the original issue date, requesting a printed driving record from your local licensing authority before travelling can help ensure a smooth pickup.
