How to check if my personal insurance policy is accepted by the rental supplier?

Since the local rental supplier owns the vehicle, they'll simply be the ones to make the final call on whether your personal policy meets their specific coverage guidelines.

Step-by-Step Guide:

1Read the Rules

Open your voucher or the booking page and click on "Rental Conditions." Look for the "Payment" or "Insurance" sections to see if the supplier requires specific coverage limits (like a $1M minimum liability) or excludes certain credit cards.

2Watch for Liability Gaps

Your personal policy might do a fantastic job covering damage to the rental car, but it might skip over damage accidentally caused to other people or their property (Third-Party Liability/SLI).
If your policy doesn't include this, the local team will usually just ask you to add their liability coverage at the desk to make sure everyone is fully protected.

3Print Your Proof

It's always best to bring a physical, printed copy of your policy’s "Declaration Page" or a handy letter from your credit card company (dated within the last 30 days). Just make sure it clearly shows your name, the policy number, and your coverage limits!

4Verify with the Supplier

Since we aren't able to view your private policy details on our end, a great way to ensure a smooth pick-up is to call the rental supplier directly using the number on your voucher. They can easily let you know if your documents are good to go!

Expectation:

"I have my insurance app on my phone, so I can just show them my digital card at the desk."

Reality:

Most rental suppliers prefer physical, printed documents rather than digital proofs or phone screenshots when waiving their in-house coverage. Having a printed copy ready is the best way to avoid needing to purchase their coverage at the counter!

Expectation:

"DiscoverCars.com can tell me if my State Farm or Amex policy works for this car."

Reality:

Because we act as a booking platform, we aren't able to see your private insurance terms. The local rental supplier is the best team to approve your proof of coverage when you arrive at the desk.

💡 Did You Know?

In many European countries, a basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is standard and already included in your rental price by law. This means your personal insurance might only be needed to cover the deductible, rather than the whole car!
In the US and Canada, using personal insurance to completely waive the CDW is much more common.

If you plan to use your own coverage, just give the local supplier a quick call to verify your plan and print your policy declaration page before you travel.
