What is the maximum age at which I can rent a car?
There isn’t a single global maximum age for renting a car - it depends on the country you’re visiting and the specific rental supplier. Many suppliers welcome drivers over 70, though some have special requirements or fees to note.
Step-by-Step Guide:
On our search page, uncheck the “Driver aged 30-65” box and enter your actual age. The system will show only the cars you’re eligible to rent.
If you are over 70 (or 65 in certain locations), rental suppliers may apply a Senior Driver Fee to account for higher insurance premiums. When you enter your age during the booking search, this fee is automatically included in the total price displayed.
Click the “Rental Conditions” link on any car offer and check the “Driver Requirements” section. This lists maximum age limits (if any) and any extra costs.
Some rental locations require drivers over a certain age (usually 70 or 75) to bring a doctor’s letter or medical certificate confirming they are fit to drive. To be accepted at the desk, make sure it’s dated within the last three months.
"I have a valid license and local laws say I can drive, so I should be able to rent regardless of my age."
Rental companies are private businesses, and their insurance policies set the age limits for renting, regardless of local driving laws. If your age exceeds a supplier’s maximum, they will be unable to proceed with the rental.
"The price I see online is my final price, even if I leave the 30-65 age box checked."
Leaving the default box checked might hide a Senior Driver Fee that applies when your exact age falls outside that range. Always enter your real age to see the full cost upfront.
💡 Did You Know?
Some suppliers don’t have a strict maximum age, but drivers over 70 may need to purchase a specific insurance package or show a recent medical certificate at the desk.
