How old do I have to be to rent a car?

The minimum age to rent a car varies depending on the country and rental supplier.
While it’s typically between 18 and 21 years old, there isn’t a single global rule.

Step-by-Step Guide:

1Use the Age Filter

When searching on our website, uncheck the "Driver aged 30-65" box and enter your actual age
The system will automatically show only cars you’re eligible to rent.

2Watch for Fees at the Desk

If you are under 25 (or over 70 in certain locations), a Young Driver Fee or Senior Driver Fee may apply. These mandatory surcharges are set by the rental supplier and are typically paid directly at the rental desk, rather than online.

3Check License Tenure

Age isn’t the only consideration. Most suppliers also require that you have held a full, valid driver’s license for at least 1 year - and in some cases, 2 years - before your rental begins.

4Read the Rental Conditions

Before you book, click on the "Rental Conditions" link on the car offer.
Look for the "Driver Requirements" section to see the exact minimum and maximum age limits as well as license tenure rules for that specific car.

Expectation:

"I entered my age on the website, so the Young Driver Fee is included in my online total."

Reality:

Even if you enter your age during the search, Young Driver and Senior Driver fees are typically listed as "Payable at Pick-up" and must be paid directly to the supplier.

Expectation:

"I am 26 years old, so I am old enough to rent any car without issues."

Reality:

Even if you meet the age requirement, a recently issued driver’s license (for example, only 6 months old) may not qualify. You need to meet both the minimum age and the required license tenure, which is typically 1–2 years, to rent a car.

Expectation:

"I have been driving for 40 years, so I won't face any age restrictions."

Reality:

Drivers over 70 (and in some locations, over 65) may be subject to a Senior Driver Fee or may need to provide a signed medical certificate confirming their fitness to drive, depending on local supplier requirements.

💡 Did You Know?

Provisional licenses or learner’s permits are not accepted by rental suppliers.
All drivers must hold a full, valid driver’s license.
Additionally, the age and license tenure requirements apply to every driver listed on the rental contract, not just the Main Driver.

What To Do Next:

If you already have a booking, review the “Driver Requirements” section on your voucher to confirm the rules for your rental.
